Any list of recommended books for 8 year olds should include books that teach kids about Good Manners.
My Joy Berry Classics collection of self-help books for kids includes several books about manners. My favorite one is Living Skills – Every Kid’s Guide to Good Manners. Essentially, this book teaches kids the following important information about good manners:
The Golden Rule is “Treat other people the way you want to be treated.” The Golden Rule is the basis for all good manners. When you have good manners, you treat other people the way you want to be treated.
When you treat other people the way you want to be treated, you treat them with respect and kindness.
You are polite, considerate, and caring. You are gracious.
You need to be gracious and have good manners when you:
• meet other people for the first time,
• meet people who are disabled or have special needs,
• talk with other people,
• eat with other people,
• play with other people,
• work with other people,
• visit other people, and
• use other people’s belongings.
Here are some things you can do to be gracious and have good manners:
• Help someone carry his or her load.
• Open a door for someone.
• Offer someone your seat if he or she needs it more than you do.
• Pick up something another person drops and give it to him or her.
• Help a person when he or she is struggling to put on an article of clothing, such as a coat.
• Help someone get something he or she needs.
• Cover your mouth when you yawn, sneeze, or cough.
• Do not do anything to disturb someone who does not want to be disturbed.
• Be on time wherever you go.
• Take turns being first.
• Don’t be greedy by insisting that you get the biggest or best for yourself.
• Step aside and let the other person pass when he or she is walking directly toward you.
Having good manners is following the Golden Rule which is “Treat other people the way you want to be treated.”
