WHY? Because there’s no way to protect children from experiencing trauma either directly or indirectly. For example, even children from families that never go through a divorce are likely to be exposed to divorce via their acquaintances. And the best way to survive any trauma is to understand it and process it in beneficial rather than destructive ways. Each GOOD ANSWERS TO TOUGH QUESTIONS book defines a trauma and explains what can be done to avoid the trauma or, if it can’t be avoided, turn it into a positive rather than a negative life experience.

And that’s why all 10 GOOD ANSWERS TO TOUGH QUESTIONS books are an ESSENTIAL RESOURCE

MESSAGES FROM JOY

Good Answers to Tough Questions:

My children and I have experienced our share of traumatic experiences–traumatic births, disabilities, life-threatening illnesses, divorce, challenging relocations, fatal accidents, enormous losses and more.

Because my young children seldom initiated conversations about the traumas that swirled around them, I assumed (hoped) that they were oblivious to what was happening. However, I could not have been more wrong. Children often lack the emotional or communication skills to talk about a trauma. Or they might fear that acknowledging or discussing a trauma will only make it worse and thus more painful.

When children do not know, they intuit. And while their intuition is often helpful in informing them that something is wrong, it ceases to be helpful if it does not lead to the acquisition of honest, accurate information. That is because, in the absence of true information, children often use their imaginations to fill in the blanks with their own misguided conclusions.

Unfortunately, if left uncorrected, misguided conclusions can morph into notions that have a negative effect on a child’s feelings, thinking and behavior. And if the notions are allowed to persist, they can eventually become internal fears and phobias that can haunt people throughout their lives. Consequently, it is important to correct any misguided conclusions related to childhood trauma in order to avoid their possible long-term effects.

It is also important to understand that, while some traumas are experienced directly, other traumas might be experienced indirectly. For example, a child observing someone else going through a trauma might also be affected by the trauma. And, no matter how much parents strive to shield their children from the pain caused by direct or indirect trauma, it is most likely that their children will absorb the pain.

The only way for children to move beyond the pain caused by a trauma is to process the trauma appropriately. The GATQ books can help children understand and process trauma in a constructive way.

Danger Zones:

The primary responsibility of parents is to ensure the safety of their children. However, given the fact that parents cannot always be with their children, how can they keep their children safe? The answer is, “they can’t.”

That is why it is necessary for parents to:

  • Encourage children to respect their fear when it is warning them of a possible danger,
  • Make children aware about the dangers that surround them,
  • Teach children how to avoid dangers, and
  • Teach children how to handle the dangers they encounter.

The DZ books help parents provide the information and tools that can empower children to keep themselves safe.
