On my list of best books for 3 year olds is one of my favorites—Let’s Talk About Being Good.
Telling children to “be good” is seldom helpful and can even be frustrating if the children are not exactly sure what is expected of them. Let’s Talk About Being Good includes this valuable information for children:
Being good is following the rules and treating people and things respectfully.
Sometimes being good requires that you avoid doing something bad.
Avoid doing bad things on purpose. Do these good things instead:
Find out what the rules are.
Follow the rules.
Do not break the rules.
Avoid doing bad things accidentally. Do these good things instead:
Avoid playing roughly with others.
Be careful around things that might get damaged or destroyed.
Be careful with the things you use.
Use things the way they are supposed to be used.
Avoid allowing others to talk or threaten you into doing bad things. Do these good things instead:
Avoid being around people who want to do bad things.
Say, “No!” when a person tells you to do something bad.
Walk away from any person who tells you to do something bad.
Avoid doing something bad when others bother you. Do these good things instead:
Stay away from people who bother you.
Ignore people who bother you.
Walk away from people who bother you.
While you are likely good most of the time, you are not perfect. Sometimes you will do something bad.
If you do something bad, do these good things:
Avoid blaming others for your misbehavior.
Admit you did something wrong.
Apologize for your wrongdoing.
Do whatever you can to make up for your wrongdoing.
