LIVING SKILLS SUBJECTS AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS FOR AGES 9 - 11

Kids are often ill equipped to assume the responsibilities that are required of them. Failure to perform adequately creates frustrations and disappointments for kids and the people around them.

The purpose of Living Skills for ages 9 – 11 is to teach kids the information and skills they need in order to fulfill expectations. These expectations include caring for themselves and keeping themselves safe. The expectations also include following through with responsibilities to others.

It is recommended that parents enhance their kids’ natural development and growth by teaching them age-appropriate Living Skills that can help them become responsible and meet expectations.

Here are the LIVING SKILLS SUBJECTS AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS for AGES 9 – 11 presented in developmental categories and sequencing.

PERSONAL CARE

GOOD GROOMING – Educational goals should be to show how to clean and groom one’s body from head to toe.

GETTING DRESSED – Educational goals should be to teach how to select clothing that is appropriate for the occasion, weather conditions, and one’s own physical characteristics.

HAVING GOOD POSTURE – Educational goals should be to describe good posture and show kids how to stand, sit, and move so they can look and feel their best.

SLEEPING AND RESTING – Educational goals should be to explain the importance of sleep and teach kids how to get a good night’s sleep.

COOKING FOR YOURSELF – Educational goals should be to show how to plan and prepare simple and nutritious meals and snacks.

DOING HOMEWORK AND SCHOOLWORK – Educational goals should be to explain the rationale behind homework and schoolwork and teach how to do both more effectively.

GETTING GOOD GRADES – Educational goals should be to explain the appropriate use of tests and grades and teach how to derive maximum benefits from both.

CLEANING YOUR ROOM – Educational goals should be to use a step-by-step approach to teach how to organize personal belongings and clean a bedroom.

TRAUMA – Educational goals should be to define trauma and its causes and teach kids how to handle it in constructive ways.

TIME MANAGEMENT – Educational goals should be to teach kids how to organize their time in order to accomplish the things they need and want to do.
